DWP PIP axe: Thousands set to lose benefits

PIP axe to hit thousands

Thousands of people are set to lose their benefits as the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) cracks down on Personal Independence Payment (PIP) claims.

1. Eligibility for PIP to be tightened

The changes will see the eligibility criteria for PIP tightened, with claimants having to demonstrate a more severe level of disability before they can qualify for support.

The DWP is currently reviewing all PIP claims, and anyone who is found to no longer meet the criteria will have their benefits stopped.

2. Backlog of PIP appeals to be cleared

The DWP is also working to clear a backlog of PIP appeals, with around 50,000 cases currently waiting to be heard.

The government has pledged to clear the backlog by 2025, but some campaigners have expressed concerns that the process could take even longer.

3. PIP cuts could leave families struggling

The DWP has said that the changes to PIP are necessary to ensure that the system is fair and sustainable.

However, charities have warned that the cuts could leave families struggling to pay for basic essentials.

The Disability Rights UK charity has said that the government should be "ashamed" of the cuts, which it said will "have a devastating impact on the lives of disabled people and their families."
